The long-term weather forecasts say that the Mid-Atlantic region is due for many snow events this season, but not the massive snow blasts that were served last year.  In time we will see.  We have been preparing for winter too.  A few things we have done to prepare is updating and servicing many furnaces, changing many lighting fixtures and bulbs to CFL (compact fluorescent bulbs)  and flooring in most common areas for better energy efficiency and safety, adding ceiling fans for energy efficient comfort  and checking Peak Reward ® thermostats.  Be sure that you are signed up for the BGE program at 100% to maximize your credits that start in the spring. 

On an unrelated note, I was glad to hear that American’s are spending much less on credit; that’s good for all of us in the long run.  I hope that you were part of those statistics.  Paying bills timely, including your rent, has a very important long term consequence for you.  It affects your credit and rental histories.  These histories can be with you for a very long time whether you rent in another city, around the corner or look to purchase a home or other significant assets down the road.  Your credit history should be looked at as part of your family.  Protect it, respect it, don’t extend it too far and spend time being sure you are doing what is best for it.

My Top SEVEN Safety and Comfort Tips

1)    RESPECT smoke and carbon monoxide detectors! – In the past few months there have been several large fires and carbon monoxide deaths in the news; most if not all of these deaths could have been avoided.  Most of these homes did not have smoke or carbon monoxide detectors, which I just cannot understand since they are both very available (free to many from local fire departments) and affordable; hence no excuses.  Certainly, NEVER, I repeat NEVER, disconnect any of your detectors other than to change the batteries.  They are there to protect you, your precious family and your neighbors as well as everyone’s property.  If your detectors chirp, CHANGE THE BATTERIES IMMEDIATELY, that is why they are chirping, and reset them in place ASAP.

2)    WATCH for slow drains. Shower, sink and toilet drains that seem slow should be addressed immediately to avoid much larger problems and potentially huge messes.  Notify Howie B immediately after you have tried to appropriately clear the drain yourself with a plunger, a liquid drain cleaner or by clearing the sink stopper with your hand.  Everyone should own a plunger and have commercial liquid drain cleaner on hand for the just in case situations. (Available at Home Depot®, Lowe’s® and other fine stores.)

3)    OBSERVE – Do you see any ceiling or wall stains or cracks in either?  This could be moisture stains caused from a roofing, siding, gutter drain, or flashing issue.  The heavy snows and pounding rains and winds of the past two years have certainly put a stress test to roofing in the region.  Just let us know if you suspect that something is an issue, it is usually easy to resolve now and thwart off larger issues and inconveniences for both of us later.

4)    CLEAN your dryer lint tray after EVERY load.  This sounds very simple, because it is simple.  In doing so, you will save energy, the unit will operate more efficiently, your clothes will dry faster and you will avoid a potential fire hazard.  The airflow from the vent is what dries your clothes; if the vent is full of lint the resistance and heat built up in that chamber not allowing the heat to properly dry your clothes.

5)    ALWAYS keep your windows and doors locked.  It is not just the safety issue.  By locking them you are tightening the weather seals that keep the outside elements outside and your home will stay more comfortable for less money.  Additionally, you will have less expose from the dirt, dust and pollutants from outside which will keep you healthier.

6)    MOISTURE is not your friend!  Mold, mildew and other fungi flourish very happily near moisture. Be sure to dry the areas inside and outside your showers and bathtubs, around sinks and other water sources after use.  Additionally, never leave standing water or food in your sink or on the counters.  This too will attract the unwanted.

7)    CLEAR around all of your appliances and sinks.  Fire code requires three feet of clearance from any appliance including hot water heaters, stoves, heating systems, electric panel boxes, etc.  Also do not store things, especially bags of paper and plastic, behind or near any appliance or jammed anywhere.  Keep the area under sinks uncluttered so that you could detect water or drain problems more quickly.
